Quick answer

Our verdict

Choose a tower with published evidence behind it. In Consumer Reports' evaluation of 16 toddler towers, only the Guidecraft Contemporary Kitchen Helper and the Simplay3 Toddler Tower passed both its tip-over and entrapment checks, and even those failed a heavier second test, so supervision still matters. Check any tower against the 15 US recalls since 2021; Guidecraft's covers units sold from June 2022 to October 2023. No standard covers Pikler triangles yet: look for locking heights and rungs that cannot spin, as on Little Partners' Learn 'N Climb.

How we chose these

  1. 1Published stability evidence: Consumer Reports' tip-over and entrapment results, credited to Consumer Reports (we do not run tests)
  2. 2Recall history: US CPSC, UK product-safety and EU Safety Gate notices for the model and its brand
  3. 3Design against the known hazards: a wide base or anti-tip feet, enclosed sides, no gap a body fits through but a head does not, and on climbers locking heights and secured boards
  4. 4Clear limits: an age range and a maximum load that agree across the maker's box, manual and listing
  5. 5Availability: where each one can actually be bought

Best evidence: passed both of Consumer Reports' main checks

Guidecraft Contemporary Kitchen Helper Toddler Tower

GuidecraftAges: 18 months to 7 yearsPrice band: $$$

Why we picked it

One of only two towers, out of 16 in Consumer Reports' evaluation, that passed both its 35 lb tip-over test and its entrapment check; like every tower that passed, it then failed a heavier 59 lb test. Solid hardwood and birch plywood, folds flat, rated 18 months to 7 years and 125 lb. Units sold from June 2022 to October 2023 are under a recall for a platform that can loosen: the card below says how to check yours.

A folding wooden toddler tower of solid hardwood and birch plywood, 23 x 23 x 36 inches, with a platform that sets at 15 or 18 inches, anti-tip feet, a non-slip mat and mesh side panels. Guidecraft rates it for 18 months to 7 years and up to 125 lb. In Consumer Reports' published lab evaluation of 16 towers, it passed both CR's 35-lb tip-over test and its entrapment check; CR reports it failed a secondary 59-lb test, as did every tower that passed at 35 lb.

Material
Solid hardwood and birch plywood; GREENGUARD Gold (maker)
Platform heights
Platform at 15 or 18 in (38 or 46 cm); a screwdriver is needed
Maximum load
125 lb (57 kg)
Footprint
23 x 23 in, 36 in tall (58 x 58 x 91 cm)
Folding
Folds flat

Good to know

  • One of only two towers to pass both of Consumer Reports' main tests (tip-over at 35 lb and entrapment)
  • Folds flat and ships almost fully assembled
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified, according to the maker
  • 125 lb limit and an 18-month to 7-year age range

Watch out for

  • Changing the platform height needs a screwdriver
  • Expensive, and we found no current Amazon listing
  • Free shipping only within the continental United States

Recall on some units

Kitchen Helper towers sold from 1 June 2022 to 31 October 2023 can have a platform that loosens or detaches (CPSC 26-490, May 2026). For this Contemporary model, the affected serial numbers run from A1023 to J1023 on the foil sticker under the platform. Owners get a free replacement platform and repair kit; stop using an affected tower until it is fixed.

Also passed both checks, in easy-clean plastic

Simplay3 Toddler Tower Adjustable Stool

Simplay3Ages: 18 months to 5 yearsPrice band: $$$

Why we picked it

The other tower that passed both of Consumer Reports' main checks: double-wall plastic, a wide base and six non-skid feet, made in the US. It is rated to 60 lb and age 5, lower than the wooden towers. Older units (model 41807, made 2018 to 2023) were recalled for tipping, and current towers have the wider base that followed.

A US-made toddler tower of double-wall plastic, 34.5 inches tall, 26 inches wide and 20.5 inches deep, with a platform at 12, 15 or 18 inches, high sides, a wide base and six non-skid feet. Simplay3 rates it for 1.5 to 5 years and 60 lb. In Consumer Reports' published lab evaluation, it passed CR's 35-lb tip-over test and entrapment check and failed the secondary 59-lb test; CR notes it gained a wider base after a 2023 recall.

Material
Double-wall plastic, six non-skid feet; made in the USA
Platform heights
Platform at 12, 15 or 18 in (30, 38 or 46 cm)
Maximum load
60 lb (27 kg)
Footprint
26 x 20.5 in, 34.5 in tall (66 x 52 x 88 cm)

Good to know

  • One of only two towers to pass both of Consumer Reports' main tests
  • Wide base and six non-skid feet
  • Easy-to-clean plastic, made in the USA
  • Fits under most counters when stored, according to the maker

Watch out for

  • 60 lb limit, lower than most wooden towers
  • Recommended only up to age 5
  • Takes floor space: about 26 x 20.5 inches

Recall on some units

Earlier Simplay3 Toddler Towers (model 41807, made November 2018 to June 2023) could tip over (CPSC 23-265, August 2023). Owners get free stabilizing bases, and Simplay3's recall page lists the affected UPCs. Current towers have the wider base; check any second-hand tower before use.

Highest stated weight limit, rails on all four sides

Little Partners The Learning Tower (original)

Little PartnersAges: 2 to 6Price band: $$$

Why we picked it

The design Little Partners has sold since 1992: rails on all four sides, four platform heights set without tools, a 250 lb limit and, according to the maker, safety testing to ASTM F963-17. It was not in Consumer Reports' evaluation, so there are no published stability results, and it was out of stock in the official store when we checked.

The original Learning Tower, sold by Little Partners since 1992: layered birch and poplar, 38.07 inches high, 23.18 wide and 33.14 deep, four platform heights set without tools (10.59 to 18.39 inches), four-sided rails and a deliberately heavy build. Little Partners rates it for ages 2 to 6 and up to 250 lb and says it is safety tested to ASTM F963-17 and 16 CFR 1307. It was not part of Consumer Reports' evaluation.

Material
Birch and poplar; tested to ASTM F963-17 (maker)
Platform heights
Four heights, about 10.6 to 18.4 in (27 to 47 cm), no tools
Maximum load
250 lb (113 kg)
Footprint
23.2 x 33.1 in, 38.1 in tall (59 x 84 x 97 cm)

Good to know

  • Heavy, wide build, the traits Consumer Reports linked with better stability
  • Four platform heights without tools
  • 250 lb limit and a lifetime warranty, according to the maker
  • The company's CEO co-chairs the ASTM task group drafting a toddler tower standard (Consumer Reports)

Watch out for

  • Out of stock in every color in the official store on 2 October 2026
  • No independent stability results: it was not in Consumer Reports' tests
  • Large footprint: about 23 x 33 inches
  • Recommended from age 2, later than many rivals

Maker guidance: ages 2 to 6, up to 250 lb. A different Little Partners model, the Grow 'N Stow Folding Learning Tower (LP01711, date codes 202409 to 202501), was recalled by CPSC on 20 November 2025 (26-096) because its platform can collapse; that recall does not cover this tower. Supervise at arm's length. No mandatory US safety standard covers toddler towers; an ASTM voluntary standard was still in draft in September 2026.

Best Pikler triangle for locking and rung design

Little Partners Learn 'N Climb Triangle

Little PartnersAges: 1+Price band: $$$$

Why we picked it

It addresses two problems CPSC staff found in a 2025 scan of home climbers: each of its four heights locks in place, and metal-to-metal joints stop the rungs from spinning. Rated from 12 months and 200 lb, made in the US. At about 30 inches tall at its lowest, it stands higher than the 18-inch top rung CPSC staff recommended, so stay close while a toddler climbs.

A US-made Pikler triangle in layered birch and poplar with four height positions that each lock in place, metal-to-metal connections that stop the rungs from spinning, and a frame that folds flat. Little Partners says it is designed for children from 12 months, holds up to 200 lb and is safety tested to ASTM F963-17; it measures 26.12 x 38.66 x 30.37 inches at its lowest height.

Material
Birch and poplar; made in the USA
Platform heights
Four locking heights; 30.4 in (77 cm) tall at its lowest
Maximum load
200 lb (91 kg)
Footprint
26.1 x 38.7 in (66 x 98 cm)
Folding
Folds flat

Good to know

  • Locking height positions and non-spinning rungs, two issues CPSC staff flagged in other climbers
  • Made in the USA from FSC-compliant wood
  • 200 lb limit and a lifetime warranty, according to the maker
  • Folds flat

Watch out for

  • Expensive for a single triangle; ramps and slides cost extra
  • About 30 inches tall at its lowest setting, above the 18-inch top rung CPSC staff recommended
  • Free shipping is offered only to the continental United States
  • No independent test results

Maker guidance: from 12 months, up to 200 lb; lock the chosen height before play and supervise. A different Little Partners product, the Grow 'N Stow Folding Learning Tower, was recalled in November 2025 (CPSC 26-096); it does not cover this triangle. CPSC staff wrote in May 2026 that no voluntary standard yet addresses home triangle climbers; in a 2025 market scan, staff found the rung spacing of all 10 climbers it checked failed a toddler head-entrapment test, and recommended locking pins, secured boards and a highest rung no more than 18 inches up.

No recall notices found in UK OPSS (October 2, 2026) and EU Safety Gate (October 2, 2026).

US CPSC, searched by hand on October 2, 2026: recall 26-096 (2025) covers the Grow 'N Stow folding tower only, not this triangle. See the search

How to choose in four questions

1. What does the evidence say? Almost nothing in this category has been tested in public. The exception is Consumer Reports, which evaluated 16 toddler towers using the draft ASTM method: a 35 lb weight hung from the top to the side for a minute to check tip-over, and torso and head probes in every gap to check entrapment. Two towers passed both checks; the picks above start there.

2. Has it been recalled? Fifteen US recalls since 2021 cover towers and kitchen steppers, eleven of them in the ten months after Consumer Reports’ investigation. Check the table below, and on a second-hand tower check the model number and date code against the notice.

3. Does the design answer the known hazards? The recalls repeat three problems: towers that tip, platforms or frames that collapse, and gaps a child’s body can slide through while the head cannot. Look for a wide base or anti-tip feet, rails or panels on every side, a platform that locks, and no gap a child’s body could slip through.

4. Does it fit your child and your kitchen? Compare the maker’s age range and maximum load, and check that the box, the manual and the listing agree: Consumer Reports found towers where they did not. Then compare the platform heights and the footprint with your counter and floor space.

What Consumer Reports found

Consumer Reports’ evaluation (published September 2025 and updated July 2026) is the only public lab comparison of toddler towers we found. Of 16 towers, 13 failed its 35 lb tip-over test and 11 failed its entrapment check, and 5 lacked adequate warning labels. The three towers that passed the tip-over test (Guidecraft, Simplay3 and Honey Joy) all failed a heavier 59 lb test. Only Guidecraft’s Contemporary Kitchen Helper and Simplay3’s Toddler Tower passed both main checks. Little Partners’ towers were not part of the evaluation. Every result here is Consumer Reports’; how we choose explains that we research rather than test.

Source: CPSC recall notices, checked 2 October 2026. The 11 notices from November 2025 on add up to 434,176 units, the figure Consumer Reports reported. In the UK, the Boon PIVOT is under a modification programme that adds weights to its feet.

Pikler triangles: what to check

No voluntary standard yet covers home triangle climbers, according to the ASTM task group’s May 2026 log. CPSC staff looked at 10 climbers in 2025 and found the rung spacing on all of them failed a toddler head-entrapment requirement. Their recommendations make a good checklist:

  • Rungs less than 3 inches or more than 9 inches apart, so a head cannot get stuck.
  • Locking pins that need two actions to release, not knobs that unscrew.
  • Boards and ramps that are secured to the frame, not just resting on a rung.
  • A top rung no higher than 18 inches for the youngest climbers.

In the EU, climbers are treated as toys under EN 71-1 and EN 71-8, and Safety Gate alerts in 2025 named rung gaps that can trap a head and frames that tip over.

  • Honey Joy Kitchen Step Stool: passed Consumer Reports’ tip-over test but failed its entrapment check.
  • COSYLAND and labebe towers: widely sold online, but COSYLAND recalled two tower models in May 2026, and neither brand’s current towers have published stability results.
  • BlueWood and Tiny Land Pikler sets: popular, with maker claims only. BlueWood’s listing gives three different age ranges and its board rests on the rungs, one of the issues CPSC staff flagged.
  • Do-it-yourself towers from step stools: no standard or test covers them.

Frequently asked questions

Are learning towers safe?

The evidence is mixed. In Consumer Reports' evaluation of 16 towers (published September 2025, updated July 2026), 13 failed its 35 lb stability test, 11 failed its entrapment check, and the three that passed stability all failed a 59 lb test. No mandatory US standard covers toddler towers; an ASTM voluntary standard was still a draft in September 2026. In the ten months after Consumer Reports' investigation, 11 tower models totalling 434,176 units were recalled in the US. Supervise at arm's length with any tower.

What age is a learning tower for?

Makers start between 12 months and 2 years: Guidecraft and Simplay3 from 18 months, Little Partners' Learning Tower from 2 years. Consumer Reports found towers whose box, manual and online listing gave different age ranges, so check all three before you buy.

Which toddler towers have been recalled?

Since 2021 the CPSC has announced 15 recalls of towers and kitchen steppers: Step2, Simplay3, Onasti, Cosco, Little Partners (Grow 'N Stow), Wiifo, TOETOL HOME, AMZCMJ DGD, Guidecraft, Cosyland, Boon, SDADI, HARPPA, Mangohood Direct and Woodure. The table in this guide lists the models, dates and problems.

Is a Pikler triangle safe?

There is no standard for them yet. In a July 2025 letter, CPSC staff said the rung spacing on all 10 climbers they checked failed a toddler head-entrapment requirement, and recommended rungs under 3 inches or over 9 inches apart, locking pins that need two actions to release, secured boards and a top rung no higher than 18 inches. In May 2026 the standards task group still had no voluntary standard that covers them.

What should I check on a second-hand tower?

Look up the model and date on the CPSC's recall list before using it. Three common cases: Simplay3 towers model 41807 made November 2018 to June 2023 (free stabilizing bases), Guidecraft Kitchen Helper towers sold June 2022 to October 2023 (free replacement platform), and Little Partners' Grow 'N Stow Folding Learning Tower with date codes 202409 to 202501 (free repair kit).

Is there a UK or EU standard for learning towers?

Not a specific one. German authorities have judged unstable learning towers against the high-chair standard EN 14988, and the only tower notice we found in the UK is a July 2026 modification programme for the Boon PIVOT, which adds weights to its feet.
